When becoming a security installer there are different routes you can take to get there you can:
- Take a course that will gain you access to it as a career.
- Take an apprenticeship, where you will have to work your way up from a trainee.
Before taking it up as a career you should make sure you have the following interests and skills:
Communication – This is because you will have to be able to explain clearly and fully how the security systems that you install work. Also you would have to ensure you have a full knowledge of the product in-case a customer has any queries about how the system works.- Practical skills – You should be able to work with and have experience with using power tools. This is because you will be using power tools to fit the alarm system so will have to be aware of all the safety issues when using the tools.
- Problem solving – You will have to be able to identify problems and in turn be able to come up with a solution as quick as possible.
- Following instructions – You will have to have the ability to follow instructions when installing the systems.
You would also have to take into consideration what the job actually in tails so here are some aspects of the job:
- Testing the system once you have installed it and showing the customer how to work the equipment.
- When people call up about system failure you would have to go to the premises and determine the problem.
- You would have to service customers systems after certain lengths of time to ensure they are still working correctly.
- Be familiar with how to work wire free or radio system links and in some cases using infrared.
There are a selection of courses you can go on and the requirements to get on to these courses varies there are two main courses you can take and these are; a level two or three NVQ in Providing Security, Emergency and Alarm Systems or you could take a City and Guilds Certificate in Security and Emergency Alarm Systems. There are, however, courses you can take along side employment which in some cases your employer may pay for.
